I was at the Bronx Zoo today (not an unusual occurence, to say the least). On the lookout for mollusks, but nothing doing. One of my favorite parts of the zoo is the Congo Gorilla forest, because in addition to excellent gorilla viewing, they have
I love okapis.
I’m often at the zoo in the off season, and on week days, so they don’t really pull out all the stops for visitors like me. On the other hand, a weekend day in August! They had all these misters making it feel more jungley, and atop one of the faux waterfalls was a Giant African Land Snail replica. I’m quite sure it was a fake because I’m pretty sure they’d keep something like that in an aquarium if they had a specimen, since they do make the top 100 list of invasive species! I didn’t get a photo because my camera seems to truly be a brick at this point, but there are lots of youtube videos of these massive mollusks. I like this time lapse one.
